Frederick Philipse was a Dutch immigrant merchant that came to North America in 1652. He inherited an abundance of wealth through a marriage in 1662 in which he pledged his allegiance to the Crown and was rewarded with a title and manorship. Serving later on the Governor's executive council, he was subsequently banned from government office for conducting a slave trade into New York.
The Horseman's Hollow is held annually at the historic Philipsburg Manor, for a haunted rendition of the Legend of Sleepy Hollow.
