Our History

The Estate Begins

The origins of Tarrytown House Estate date to 1840, when a white Georgian-style mansion—known today as the King Mansion—was built by J.S. Cronise in Tarrytown. It was soon sold to Abernathy, who expanded the estate in 1849 by acquiring a second residence on the site of today’s Biddle House, originally built by Franklin Couch. In 1859, Abernathy sold both homes to Joseph Hartly, uniting the estate and laying the foundation for one of the Hudson Valley’s most storied properties.

Two Estates Take Shape

In 1889, the estate was divided into two distinct yet connected properties. The northern portion was sold to John T. Terry and later to Thomas M. King, Vice President of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, whose name it still carries. The southern mansion remained with Hartly until its sale in 1895, and was later acquired in 1905 by William R. Harris, founder of the American Tobacco Company, who rebuilt the home in granite, shaping the Biddle House as it stands today.

A Family Connection

The estates became closely linked when Frederick King, son of Thomas M. King, married Sybil Harris, daughter of William R. Harris. After Thomas King Sr.’s death in 1911, ownership passed to his son, though control soon shifted within the family. In a notable transaction, the King Mansion was sold to Sybil Harris King for just one dollar, consolidating influence over both estates and shaping the next chapter of the property’s history.

The Biddle Era

In 1921, Sybil Harris King sold the stone mansion to Mary Duke Biddle, daughter of tobacco magnate Benjamin Duke. With her husband, Anthony Drexel Biddle Jr., she hosted lavish gatherings before retreating from society after their 1931 divorce. She transformed the estate with formal gardens, imported materials, and curated landscapes. After a 1956 fire, she rebuilt the mansion and in 1959 reunited both estates under one owner before her passing in 1960.

A Historic Estate Reimagined

In 1963, the estate was acquired by representatives of Mali to house its United Nations ambassadors, becoming a hub for diplomacy and cultural exchange. After its sale to hospitality innovator Robert Schwartz, the property began its transition into a commercial destination. Since 1994, Tarrytown House Estate has operated as a full-service hotel, welcoming guests for leisure escapes, weddings, meetings, and dining—where nearly two centuries of history are preserved and experienced.
